Netcom and Gilat excluded from SNO bidding process

13 Jan 2004

China Netcom and Israel’s Gilat Satellite Networks have reportedly been dropped from the running for Kenya’s second national operator (SNO) licence. According to Reuters, the five companies to have made it to the next round in the bidding process are Norway’s Telenor, Canadian operator Sasktel, and three separate consortia comprising Deutsche Telekom/Tata India, Kenya’s Pegrume Group/TCIL India, and China Network Corporation International/ZTE Corp. The winner of the concession will be announced in June and should launch operations in competition with incumbent Telkom Kenya by early 2005.
