SmarTone to launch 3G in second half of 2004

9 Jan 2004

SmarTone Communications says it hopes to introduce third-generation mobile services in the Hong Kong SAR sometime in the second half of this year, dependent on the wider availability and better choice of handsets. The cellco has not given firm dates but said the launch will not go ahead until dual-mode handsets capable of running on both 2.5G and 3G networks are readily available to customers. SmarTone had earmarked HKD1.5 billion on the rollout of high speed mobile services but has scaled this down as a result of the lowering of costs for 3G equipment.
