Luxembourg-based mobile holding company Millicom International Cellular (MIC) has reported its operating statistics for 2003, showing a 42% rise in subscribers to 5.69 million. MIC’s subsidiaries in Latin America comprised the bulk of the total, with its shareholdings in Bolivia (Telecel), El Salvador (Telemovil), Paraguay (Telecel), Honduras (Celtel) and Guatemala (Comcel) collectively accounting for 2.35 million subscribers, a rise of 34% over the year. MIC currently has 16 cellular operations in 15 countries. Its three operating units are MIC Latin America, Sanbao Telecom (Asia) and MIC Africa. In addition to its mobile operations MIC has five high speed wireless data businesses in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the UK, as well as a 6.8% interest in Tele2 AB, the pan-European alternative telecoms provider.
