Gansu Mobile upgrades network

Gansu Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile, has announced the award of a USD14 million contract to Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s Chinese operation. Under the terms of the deal, which will raise capacity of the network to 2.5 million users, Alcatel will deploy GSM, GPRS and EDGE solutions for completion by June 2004. In addition, Alcatel will supply 20,000 sets of GSM wireless business phones, with the aim of helping Gansu Mobile develop public telephony services in rural areas where fixed lines are not available.
