Vietnam’s national state-owned telecoms operator the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) says it deployed more than 1.7 million fixed and mobile telephone lines in 2003, boosting the country’s total number of lines to around 7.3 million. A spokesman for VNPT said the company has now achieved a teledensity of 9.02 lines per 100 inhabitants, reaching its target for 2005. Moreover, as a result of the expansion nearly 94% of Vietnam’s communes now have access to telephones, up from 92.5% at the end of 2002.
