5 Jan 2004

Gambian telecoms operator Gamtel says it plans to spend USD56.4 million in 2004 on increasing network capacity by 230,000 lines over the next five years, with the vast majority of the money coming from external financing. Gamtel has contracted Alcatel to install 35,506 lines in the Greater Banjul Area and a further 8,448 lines in other parts of the country. Meanwhile, the company has signed a deal with Airspan to provide 2,000 wireless connections for villages in the North Bank, Lower River and Upper River divisions of Gambia. Cellular services will also receive a boost with the addition of a second switch with capacity for 60,000 subscribers by the end of this year.
