17 Dec 2003

California-based equipment manufacturer UTStarcom has said that it will begin testing third-generation (3G) mobile technologies with China’s second largest fixed line operator China Netcom in February 2004. The two companies will join forces with the Ministry of Information Industry’s Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission (RITT) and 3G Technical Trial Expert Group (3GTEC) to test various technologies and applications based on the Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) standard in and around Beijing. Last week China Netcom revealed plans to conduct similar trials in Shanghai in cooperation with another US equipment supplier, Lucent Technologies.
