DSL growth exceeds expectation, lines top 55 million

17 Dec 2003

At the end of September there were more than 55 million DSL subscriptions worldwide, some two million more than earlier predicted, according to research firm Point Topic. With lines up by 80% year-on-year, the market is well on track to exceed the 60 million subscriptions originally expected by year-end. The emergence of the Chinese market has been credited for spurring much of the growth, with the country reporting the most lines added this year. The Asia Pacific region now accounts for more than half of the world’s DSL subscriptions, with Japan’s 9.2 million registered lines making it the leading country.
