Rural demand boosts subscribers by 1.9 million in a month

15 Dec 2003

India’s total mobile user base grew by 1.9 million to 26.6 million in November, according to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). Of the total approximately 20.73 million were GSM users, with the remainder CDMA customers. The COAI attributes the surge in growth to unprecedented demand in smaller towns and rural areas, spurred on by some of the lowest tariffs in the world. Reliance Infocomm leads the market with 5.855 million subscribers, followed by Bharti (5.174 million), BSNL (4.625 million), Hutchison (3.805 million) and Idea Cellular (2.081 million).
