STC invites GSM operators to build networks

10 Dec 2003

Monopoly operator Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC) has officially invited mobile operators to launch GSM networks in Saudi Arabia. The company has not revealed how many licences will be awarded but says it hopes the networks will be operational by the end of 2004. Interested parties are required to draw up a proposal by 31 December 2003 in order to pre-qualify. The Saudi government hopes that the ending of STC’s monopoly will attract foreign investment to the market and meet demand for telephony services.
