EU reports surge in mobile subscribers

11 Nov 2003

The European Union (EU) has revealed that its 15 member countries had over 300 million mobile phone users at the beginning of August, accounting for around 80% of their total population, thanks to a boom in the telecoms markets over the last year. The growth has come as a surprise to the EU, and indicates that the European market for electronic communications as a whole is on the road to recovery; broadband services and digital TV also recorded healthy growth rates. Brussels, which will present the data to EU ministers next week, estimated that the rate of growth in the EU will reach between 4% and 4.7% by the end of 2003, ahead of earlier predictions of 0.5%.
