SonyEricsson drops out of the handset vendors top five

6 Nov 2003

The global handset market continued to grow in the third quarter of 2003, up 21.2% year-on-year to 130.1 million, driven by strong demand in emerging markets and burgeoning sales of replacement handsets. However, there was bad news for SonyEricsson as it once again surrendered its top five position to LG Electronics, with market shares of 5.5% and 5.8% respectively. Nokia maintained its position at the top of the market, shipping 45.5 million handsets in the quarter to gain a 35% market share, whilst second-placed Motorola returned to growth with shipments up 27.8% to boost its share to 15.5%. Samsung and Siemens maintained their third and fourth-placed spots with shares of 11.5% and 8.7%.
