Telecoms fund to provide between ten and 30 new licences

3 Nov 2003

Communications Ministry advisor Marcio Wohlers has told BNamericas that the Brazilian government intends to award between ten and 30 concessions for the provision of broadband and voice telephony, using the BRL2.6 billion (USD900 million) universal telecoms fund (FUST). Details will be finalised in the coming weeks and the first contracts are expected to be awarded by April 2004. Before the auction can be held the state must publish a new decree allowing cable operators, which contribute to FUST, to participate in the tenders.
