Govt approves Paktel’s GSM licence

31 Oct 2003

The Frequency Allocation Board of Pakistan has approved the allocation of GSM frequency spectrum to Paktel, a subsidiary of Millicom International Cellular (MIC). Paktel launched in December 1991 over its AMPS network, but in the past year has suffered from high churn as customers switched to the digital networks of rivals Mobilink and Ufone. In February 2003 it received a GSM-900 licence from the Pakistani regulator, and following yesterday’s ratification of the award, can now begin migrating its network from analogue to digital. It has announced plans to invest USD45 million in the rollout of the new system.
