27 Oct 2003

According to Telmex, it has submitted the highest bid for bankrupt broadband service provider AT&T Latin America (ATTLA). A southern Florida bankruptcy court is expected to hold a hearing on 3 November to confirm the Mexican telco as the winner, beating the likes of Embratel, which had also expressed an interest in the company. Telmex, which is majority owned by Latin America’s richest man Carlos Slim, has reportedly offered USD205 million for ATTLA, whose subsidiaries operate in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Colombia. The deal includes the company’s high speed data transmission network which consists of 66,000km of fibre optic cables, connecting 1,026 buildings.
