CATEL signs up 500th CDMA subscriber

The Azerbaijani/US joint venture mobile operation CATEL says it has signed up 500 subscribers to its CDMA wireless service since launching commercially at the start of the year. The fledgling network covers the capital Baku and the Absheron peninsula. CATEL estimates it will have 25,000 customers by 2004/05 and will invest USD6 million in 2003, USD4 million of which will be spent on rolling out CMDA2000 1X technology.
