Carphone Warehouse set to rival BT in wireline market

8 Oct 2003

UK-based mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse group has unveiled plans to ramp up its fixed line service portfolio and become a serious competitor to former monopoly BT, in a bid to create a new source of earnings. The company had initially planned to gain 300,000 wireline customers by the end of March 2004, but has now upped this figure to 400,000. It expects to post a loss of around GBP8 million this year as it plans to pay the cost of adding subscribers up front. The fixed line service, which was first launched in February, is offered to customers under the banner Talktalk. It has already managed to sign up 140,000 subscribers since launch, stealing subscribers away from the incumbent which has seen its market share slip to around 72%.
