DoCoMo files lawsuit against state

3 Oct 2003

Japan’s leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo is suing the country’s tax authority amid claims it paid JPY11 billion too much tax in relation to its PHS networks. The sum was levied on assets which DoCoMo acquired after taking control of parent company NTT’s PHS mobile networks. News of the case comes hot on the heels of an announcement by Japan’s leading banks that they have reached an out of court settlement with the Tokyo government in relation to a lawsuit filed over a bank levy introduced in 2000. It has been reported that Mizuho, the world’s largest bank in terms of assets, expects to receive between JPY55 billion and JPY60 billion in refunds.
