TIM plans EDGE launch for mid-2004

29 Sep 2003

Italian cellco Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) has revealed plans to roll out high-speed data services based on EDGE technology by the middle of 2004, making them available to all major cities in Italy by the end of that year. The cellco maintained that the EDGE launch would not affect the rollout of 3G services, which it also plans to launch in major cities by mid-2004. TIM said, however, that the deployment of EDGE technology would depend on the availability of handsets; a number of manufacturers – including Siemens – plan to have EDGE-enabled handsets available by the second quarter of 2004.
