Tata applies for four more basic telecoms licences

19 Sep 2003

Tata Teleservices [Bombay: TTML.BO] is to apply for four more basic telecoms services licences – in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Kerela and Uttar Pradesh – taking its total to ten, despite the ongoing fracas over the legality of WiLL telephony in the country. Tata Teleservices is already offering basic services including WiLL mobility in Delhi, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. At the end of July it boasted more than 840,000 fixed and mobile subscribers. Its latest application is being interpreted as a clear sign of the company’s determination to establish itself as a fully-fledged service provider in the basic telephony market.
