Five telcos join IDA/Intel Wi-Fi initiative

16 Sep 2003

Singaporean regulator the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and microchip manufacturer Intel Corp have announced that five Asian telcos – Hong Kong-based China Mobile (Hong Kong) and PCCW, and Singapore firms MobileOne, StarHub and SingTel – will be teaming up with them for a trial project aimed at facilitating roaming between Wi-Fi hotspots. The five companies will supply hardware, software and services to enable one-bill roaming and a standard network architecture with the main aim of making Wi-Fi more convenient and easier to use. None of the participating telcos have submitted figures for investment. The collaboration will submit their findings and recommendations to global standards bodies when the trial ends in July 2004.
