Nine win licences to compete with C&W

12 Sep 2003

The government of the Cayman Islands has awarded nine licences to offer telecoms services, ending Cable & Wireless’s 40 year monopoly. The winners – which were selected from 21 applications – include AT&T Wireless, Digicel, Cellular One, CaymanTel, Aviation Communicaitons, Blue Sky Communications, GrandTel, TeleCaymen and Westar TV. According to Cayman Islands legislation alternative ISPs are allowed to begin operations from 1 November. Wireless licensees will be allowed to commence operations from 1 February 2004, with competitive international traffic providers expected to come on stream a month later.
