Unions fear Telkom retrenchment plan

10 Sep 2003

According to Seleboho Kiti, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union in South Africa, the country’s dominant telco, Telkom, plans to reduce its workforce to 28,000 in line with its restructuring plan. The move could mean the possible retrenchment of 26,000 employees and the union is planning to stage a mass protest against the operator, which has cut over 20,000 jobs since it began its re-organisation three years ago.
