Vodafone monitoring Cegetel situation

5 Sep 2003

Mobile giant Vodafone is keeping a close eye on the sell-off of debt-crippled media conglomerate Vivendi Universal, hoping for a second chance to gain control of French telco Cegetel. Vodafone has made no secret of its desire to take control of Cegetel, tempted by its 80% stake in France’s number two cellco SFR, with France the only major European market where Vodafone is without a controlling interest. Its interest has been revived by comments made earlier this week by Vivendi’s CEO hinting at the possibility of Vivendi splitting its media and telecoms assets for sale.
