Lucent facing bribery allegations

12 Aug 2003

Saudi telco National Group for Communications and Computers has filed a lawsuit against US equipment manufacturer Lucent Technologies [NYSE: LU], claiming it paid USD15 million in bribes to former telecoms minister Ali Al-Johani between 1995 and 2002. The suit, which was filed in the New York Federal Court late last week, alleges that in return for a range of benefits including accommodation at expensive hotels and the use of a private jet, Mr Ali Al-Johani encouraged the publicly owned Saudi Telecommunications Company to award Lucent a number of lucrative infrastructure contracts. Swiss equipment manufacturer ACEC has also been indicted in the case.
