Cellcos team up with NCH to restrict child access to handheld porn

8 Aug 2003

UK mobile operators are facing a pressing dilemma: as handsets become more technologically advanced, incorporating high-resolution colour screens and improved internet connectivity via GPRS and 3G, many companies are looking to tap into the demand for adult services to drive revenues. However, at the same time there is increasing pressure from parents and action groups to restrict the availability of pornography to young mobile users. It is this predicament that has led to a number of operators, including market leader Vodafone, joining forces with the National Children’s Home charity group (NCH) to draft a code of practice aimed at preventing minors from accessing improper content. The proposals will include the creation of a content classification body and suggestions for handsets to incorporate integrated child locks and access systems. Interested parties are invited to submit proposals on the code by 8 September.
