Private operators claim subscriber base of 4.4 million

India’s privately-owned fixed line operators reported a total subscriber base of 4.4 million at the end of July. Reliance Communications claimed the highest number of customers, at 2.9 million, while Tata Teleservices had 840,000 and Bharti Telenet claimed 450,000. Of the total, 3.2 million are WiLL subscribers, 850,000 are basic voice customers and 321,000 are subscribers to fixed wireless services. The private operators compete against former state-owned monopolies BSNL, MTNL and VSNL.
