30 Jul 2003

Russia’s largest cellco Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has expanded its GSM coverage in the East Urals with the commercial launch of services in Surgut and the surrounding Khanty-Mansiysk region. The operator has been actively expanding its presence in the East Urals since last year and the addition of Surgut, one of Russia’s most developed industrial centres, means that it now operates in 50 of the country’s regions with a reach of over 100 million people. The expansion includes twelve base stations around Surgut with an initial capacity of 50,000 users, rising to 100,000 should demand arise.
