Sharp first quarter was picture perfect

29 Jul 2003

Equipment vendor Sharp boasted a 13.5% rise in profit year-on-year for its fiscal first quarter, thanks to increasing demand for its camera phones. The electronics giant posted a net profit of JPY14.05 billion (USD117.6 million) for the three months ending 30 June. The bulk of its revenues came from LCD televisions and the next-generation handsets it first launched in November 2000. Growth in camera phone sales had a knock-on effect for Sharp’s components division, which manufactures key handset parts such as flash memory and microchips.
