Mobile and fixed line telcos lock horns over unified licensing

22 Jul 2003

Indian cellular operators have once again reacted badly to the the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI’s) latest proposals on unified licensing in India. The TRAI’s consultation paper calls for a regime in which all telecoms operators will able to offer wireline and wireless services, but it has been criticised by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) which believes the announcement is a callously timed manoeuvre to render ineffective a forthcoming review of wireless in the local loop (WiLL) mobility. Cellular operators have long-argued that it is unfair that fixed lines operators will be allowed to offer wireless services cheaply when they paid huge fees for mobile concessions.
