EC to accommodate German 3G buddies

15 Jul 2003

The European Commission is tomorrow expected to endorse plans for mobile operators O2 Germany and T-Mobile to cooperate in the roll out of a 3G network in Germany. The EC’s conciliatory gesture is seen as the latest indication of a more relaxed stance to help struggling 3G operators. However, the move could yet spark some protests as UK-based O2 has only five million users in Germany, whereas T-Mobile has 25 million, leading critics to complain that the British company could be ‘piggy-backing’ off T-Mobile and saving itself the high costs its other rivals will be forced to pay.
