Born on the 1st of July: Vietnam’s new CDMA network

15 Jul 2003

Saigon Post and Telecommunications (Saigon Postel) and SLD Telecom, a joint venture company in which SL Telecom, LG Electronics and Dongah Elecomm are principal partners, have launched a CDMA wireless service in Vietnam. The new joint venture between SLD and Saigon Postel, S Telecom, has been two years in the making: a business cooperation contract (BCC) was signed in October 2000 and a network operators licence received the following September. S Telecom has launched commercial operations under the brand name S-Fone and plans to provide coverage in 13 major cities including Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The fledgling cellco hopes to sign up 200,000 subscribers by the end of the year and capture around 15% of the two million-strong market. National coverage is expected by 2006.
