Antel to award GSM overlay contract

11 Jul 2003

State-run telco Antel has announced plans to award a USD15 million contract for an initial GSM overlay project at its mobile division Ancel. It expects Ericsson to be the winner, but said it will not make an official announcement until it receives government authorisation. Antel hopes that the GSM network will be operational sometime in 2004. The contract is part of a major expansion plan by Antel; it recently awarded a USD5 million contract to Nortel for the development of Ancel’s TDMA network and has announced plans to improve rural coverage and expand ADSL and data services.
