BoT reprimands BSNL

10 Jul 2003

Indian telecoms regulator DoT has rapped Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for declining to provide timely interconnection to international long-distance operators (ILD), in direct contravention of its operating licence. Clause 17.1 of BSNL’s licence agreement states that it is mandatory for ‘all national and international long-distance operators to provide interconnection to each other’. According to officials at the regulator, the department has noted the complaints by private ILD operators, which claim that despite having given the necessary requisitions, BSNL has consistently refused to provide timely points of interconnnection, which may make them default on their rollout agreements.
