1 Jul 2003

Pan-European telecoms service provider Tele2 [TEL2bq.L] has announced that it is set to introduce commercial GSM mobile services in St Petersburg on 30 June. The launch, the third such network to be offered under the Tele2 brand name in Russia, will provide coverage for a potential five million customers, in a market where mobile penetration currently stands at around 35%. Tele2 will be the fourth operator to launch in St Petersburg, the country’s second largest city and a key commercial centre. The network is based on the DCS-1800 standard, akin to the company’s other networks in Irkutsk and Rostov.
