MTC-Vodafone invests in Bahrain launch

19 Jun 2003

MTC-Vodafone has confirmed that it plans to invest USD160 million in the launch of a new mobile network due to begin operations in Bahrain in December this year, contradicting previous reports that the investment was to total USD500 million. The project, which will be the second mobile service in the Kingdom, has been offered a 15 year contract which stipulates that for the first two years incumbent Batelco will be its only competition. The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) took financial strength and staying power into consideration when awarding the operating licence as it looks to increase competition in the sector.
