Ericsson employee jailed for espionage

19 Jun 2003

A former employee of Ericsson, who was made redundant as a result of job cuts in the company, has been jailed for eight years after being convicted of passing secret company documents to a Russian intelligence agency. Afshin Bavand cooperated with two other employees to gather and hand over documents that could have compromised Sweden’s national security. Though the evidence was sealed in court and witnesses were sworn to secrecy for 20 years, it is thought that the documents contained information on Ericsson’s mobile and fixed line operations. While Ericsson also supplies defence products, it appears that the documents did not contain information on these activities.
