Satellite operator SES Global is set to announce that it has signed a ‘far-reaching’ alliance with Paris-based equipment vendor Alcatel to extend broadband capability in Europe, according to the Financial Times. Alcatel is expected to provide both financing and technology support, and take an 18% interest in regional wireless broadband provider Satlynx. The latter is a joint venture established in 2002 by SES Global and Israel’s Gilat Satellite Networks. The move will increase competition in the market by providing broadband connectivity in areas with no terrestrial cover. European telcos are coming under pressure from satellite operators in the race to secure domestic broadband connections and SES hopes to capitalise by launching two new satellites in the near future.
