3G handsets to go global

16 Jun 2003

Japan’s top cell phone makers are set to enter the international market with their 3G video and photo handsets, competing with companies such as Finnish giants, Nokia. As 3G services take off globally there has been an increase in demand for higher-end user products, an area that the Japanese manufacturers wish to focus on, leaving the less profitable mid-range and lower-end of the market to the established international suppliers. Leading suppliers Panasonic and NEC expect their overseas shipments to drastically increase over the next year. Panasonic predicts international sales will increase from six million to ten million while NEC is looking to see a 400%year-on-year rise in overseas shipments.
