Mexican cellco America Móvil [NYSE: AMX] announced yesterday that it had signed a contract with German equipment supplier Siemens [NYSE: SI] for the provision of a GSM/EDGE network for the five B-band and three PCS mobile companies operating under its Brazilian subsidiary Telecom Americas. The deal is the third of its kind for the Mexican operator. It contracted Nokia to provide EDGE technology for its subsidiaries in Colombia and Ecuador in February this year, while Siemens has signed two GSM/GPRS/EDGE agreements with the cellco. America Móvil hopes to become the first operator in Latin America to launch EDGE services, enabling it to offer its customers easy transmission of multimedia clips and e-mails. The cellco hopes that the Telecom Americas contract will enable it to consolidate its position in the Brazilian market through the launch of services in Sao Paulo, where is does not yet have a presence.
