GVT quits telco association

3 Jun 2003

Brazilian local services operator, Global Village Telecom (GVT), has terminated its alliance with fixed line association Abrafix, after a disagreement over the government’s plans to change the regulations to include obligatory unbundling and number portability; a stipulation which would come in to force in January 2006 and remain valid for 20 years. While GVT and fellow competitive local exchange carrier Vesper, as well as long-distance operators Embratel and Intelig support the move, fixed line incumbents Brasil Telecom, Telemar and Telesp are opposed to plans on the basis that they would drastically cut profits.
