mmO2 to launch O2 Active in June

30 May 2003

UK based cellco mmO2 has announced that it is to launch a mobile data application to rival Vodafone’s Live service in the UK, Germany and Ireland in early June. Unlike Vodafone’s offering which requires a specific handset, the new service, branded O2 Active, will be available to post-paid and pre-paid users of 15 existing models; mmO2 plans to introduce at least another five capable of facilitating the service by August. The move follows the recent trend of operators introducing services over 2.5G networks whilst awaiting the overdue rollout of 3G. O2 Active will offer access to information, video, games and ringtones through a colour screen. mmO2 hopes to attract more than 350,000 customers by the launch date. Vodafone introduced its equivalent service in October last year and recently announced an uptake of 1.5 million; a success story that mmO2 hopes to match; it aims to have 25% of its sales revenue generated by the service by 2004.
