BT to converge voice and data

28 May 2003

UK incumbent BT [BT.L] has begun a significant restructuring of its business with the convergence of its voice and data enterprise networks. The new unit, to be called ‘Convergence Solutions’, is due to launch next month and will be made up of businesses currently achieving a turnover of around GBP1 billion, including the group’s PABX supply and support, packaged solutions and data network integration units. The restructuring is the latest in a long line of changes implemented by BT chief executive Ben Verwaayen since he arrived in early 2002. Under his guidance the telco recorded net profits of GBP1.65 billion for the first three months of 2003, maintaining profitability for the fourth straight quarter.
