C&WWI to launch GSM services

23 May 2003

Cable & Wireless West Indies (C&WWI) has announced plans to iinvest USD200 million in upgrading its TDMA network to GSM/GPRS in all the Caribbean islands it operates in by the end of the year. The company currently has mobile operations in all twelve islands and plans to make GSM/GPRS services available in the larger islands of Jamaica, Barbados and the Caymans by the second half of 2003, following with the smaller islands throughout the rest of the year. Although all tests of the operation have been successful, the details of the services, such as billing systems, have not been finalised and the company has not started to market the launch as yet. The network build-out is being managed by Nortel Networks, which won a USD100 million contract in November 2002.
