Pressure mounts on Telefónica

22 May 2003

Telefónica del Perú [Lima: TELb] is once again under fire from the Peruvian Congress, with the president of the government’s consumer defence commission, Yonhy Lescano, urging the Constitutional Tribunal to declare the telco’s contract with the state illegal. 64 representatives, more than half of Congress, have backed Lescano’s 60-page lawsuit. In January Lescano’s attempts to have the basic monthly fee for fixed line calls eliminated, a move which would have seriously damaged Telefónica’s profits, was vetoed by President Alejandro Toledo.
