Telecom Italia opens up broadband market

Telecom Italia [NYSE:TI] has announced plans to invest EUR2.5 billion in 2002-2005 to extend its broadband offerings; it plans to focus on increasing access speeds over traditional copper networks. So far ASDL coverage is available to 78% of the Italian population, supplied by 2,100 exchanges in 1,300 towns. The company has also announced the launch of Europe’s first pre-paid ASDL service offering a low-cost option where users can pay in advance for internet use, with no costs appearing on phone bills. Telecom Italia estimates that 100% of the population will have broadband access by 15 May 2003.
