Telesp expands beyond Sao Paulo

Brazilian fixed line telco Telesp began expanding its services outside its original concession area of Sao Paulo yesterday, the first local telephony incumbent to do so. The operator has already launched services in the state capitals of Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Vitoria, Florianopolis and Aracaju, as well as in three municipalities in Rio de Janeiro state. Under Anatel’s regulations. Telesp must deploy local lines equivalent to 1% of the city’s population in 25% of the country’s state capitals, and 25% of all municipalities with populations of 500,000 inhabitants or more, before the end of the year.
