Interconnection row rumbles on in Nigeria

11 Apr 2003

A simmering row between Nigerian incumbent NITEL and the country’s GSM operators over interconnection is showing no sign of resolving itself, after the company’s management said it would not use its cash to create circuits for rival operators. NITEL GSM’s managing director Emmanuel Omeata and NITEL spokesman Davis Daramola said it was standard practice elsewhere for an operator to provide the circuit with which to connect to another operator, but that in Nigerian the other operators – MTN, Econet and Globacom – had failed to do so and were waiting for NITEL to provide circuits for them. NITEL, which is a new player in the GSM sector, said it would be unfair and unwise to take such a path.
