Unicom launches CDMA 1X network

31 Mar 2003

China’s second largest mobile carrier China Unicom said it has completed rollout of its new 2.5G mobile network based on CDMA 1X technology and launched the service commercially in major cities around the country. The cellco will market the new offering under the brand name U-Max, which it hopes will strengthen its position in the market as it vies with rival China Mobile. With competition fierce in the world’s fastest growing market, China Mobile launched its Mobile-Zone service earlier this month through which it hopes to attract more young users by offering cheap SMS services.
