Nigerian telecoms investment reaches USD2.1 billion

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Dr Haliru Bello Mohammed, has said that private investment in the country’s telecoms sector reached a record high of USD2.1 billion in December 2002, a USD2.05 billion rise from the USD50 million recorded in December 1999. In a keynote speech to the inaugural meeting of the West African Telecommunications Regulators (WAT-RA) the minister said that since December 1999 Nigeria had increased fixed lines from 450,000 to 702,000 and boosted wireless users to 1.6 million from 30,000 previously.
